5 Reasons You Should Eat Butter (Yes, you read that right!)

These days, there is so much misinformation in regards to what you should and should not eat.

At the very top of that list is the confusion around saturated fats and their presence in our diet.  

Today I’m going to give you 5 solid reasons to ditch the margarine, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter spread, spray butter, Earth Balance spreadable margarine, Smart Balance, and any other food-like imitation of butter.

1) Imitation butter spreads are making us sick.

To start off, listed below are the ingredients in I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter spread. How many people out there are using this in place of good, old-fashioned butter in the name of it being “heart-healthy.” Look below, how many ingredients on that list do you know and recognize? Probably not many. The truth is that this product contains refined and hydrogenated oils which can cause cancer, heart disease, immune system dysfunction, sterility, learning disabilities growth problems and osteoporosis, especially when heated to high temperatures during the cooking process.

INGREDIENTS: Vegetable Oil Blend (Liquid Soybean Oil, Liquid Canola Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil), Water, Sweet Cream Buttermilk (Adds a Dietarily Insignificant amount of cholesterol), Salt, Soy Lecithin, Vegetable Mono and Diglycerides, Potassium Sorbate (Used to Protect Quality), Citric Acid, Artificial Flavor, Vitamin A Palmitate, Beta Carotene (for Color).

During the period of rapid increase in heart disease (1920-1960), American consumption of animal fats declined but consumption of hydrogenated and industrially processed vegetable fats increased dramatically.

The best fats for cooking are grass-fed butter, tallow, lard, or palm and coconut oils.

2) Our body needs fat.

Saturated fats play many important roles in the body.  They provide integrity to the cell wall, promote the body’s use of essential fatty acids, enhance the immune system, protect the liver and contribute to strong bones.  The lungs and kidneys cannot work without saturated fat.  Saturated fats do not cause heart disease, in fact, they are the preferred food for the heart. Because your body needs saturated fats, it makes them out of carbohydrates and excess protein in you aren’t eating enough in your diet.

3) Butter tastes good.

4) It keeps you fuller for longer.

When you are eating low-fat, fake food substitutes, your body is never actually getting the nutrients it needs to feel full and satiated so you continue to have cravings.  Traditional diets contained 30% – 80% of calories as healthy fats.

5) Butter and healthy fats help with weight management.

The idea that butter causes individuals to gain weight in an unfortunate misconception.  The short and medium chain fatty acids are used for quick energy and all the rich nutritients in butter give you a feeling of satisfaction when consumed.

Now that you know WHY butter is beneficial, let’s take a look at your butter selection.

How do you know WHICH butter is best?

If you are ready to play in the big leagues and make some serious strides for your health & wellness, RAW BUTTER is the way to go.  Now, this is something that needs to be purchased from your local organic farmer and I acknowledge this may not be accessible to everyone.  There are online farms and resources that will deliver right to your door OR you can always make your own at home.
