The elixir to alkalize your body first thing in the morning, Apple Cider Vinegar.

The elixir to alkalize your body first thing in the morning, Apple Cider Vinegar.

I am a huge fan of rituals, the habits and practices that help keep us grounded, focused, and empowered to feel your best.

My favorite rituals of the day happen in the morning and night.

When I wake up, I start a new day with a few words of gratitude.

No matter what your current state upon waking is, there is always something to be grateful for.

It can go something like this:

“Thank you for this day. I’m grateful for my eyes that can look out the window and see the sun shining bright.”

“Thank you for my strong, healthy body. I am grateful for my two legs that take me where I need and want to go.”

“Thank you for the hurdles I am overcoming. I’m grateful for my drive to create positive change in my life.”

It can be anything!

A prayer of thanks and gratitude is your way of saying thank you to the Universe/God/Higher Power and attracting more of that into your life.

Try it on yourself. How different does that feel than rolling out of bed and grumbling your way to the bathroom thinking about the meeting you have, the boss who drives you crazy and deadlines you have to hit?

How about: “Thank you for my boss who drives me crazy. Through this experience I understand that I want to work for someone who is kind, considerate and open-minded. Hey, I may even want to be my own boss!”

After your prayer of thanks and fueling your spirit, it’s time to fuel your body.

The magic morning elixir looks like this:
½ – 1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
16 ounces water
Fresh squeezed lemon

Now you may be wondering why something as acidic in nature as vinegar and lemon would be alkalizing to the body and the reason is that because they are already acidic, when you digest them, the body does not need to create more acid to break it down – it simply creates an alkaline environment.

Apple Cider Vinegar is one of the oldest, most powerful, healing home remedies imaginable.

Below are some of the health benefits of including it in your daily diet:
– An immediate improvement in digestion and reflux
– Relief of pollen, food and pet allergies
– Cures sinus infections.
– Curbs food cravings
– Brings a healthy, vibrant glow to one’s complexion
– Helps break down fat to assist in weight loss
– Lowers blood pressure
– Assists with chronic fatigue

Apple Cider Vinegar’s vitamin content includes Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, Provitamin beta-carotene, Vitamin P (bioflavonoids).

According to Paul Bragg, Apple Cider Vinegar is a ‘perfect food’:

Natural (undistilled) organic, raw ACV can really be called one of Mother Nature’s most perfect foods, the worlds first natural medicine. It is made from fresh, crushed apples which are then allowed to mature naturally in wooden barrels, as wood tends to “boost” the natural fermentation. Research worldwide supports and commends what Hippocrates (the father of medicine) found and treated his patients with in 400 B.C. He discovered that natural, undistilled Apple Cider Vinegar (or ACV)* is a powerful cleansing and healing elixir – a naturally occurring antibiotic and antiseptic that fights germs, bacteria, mold and viruses – for a healthier, stronger, longer life!

It also reacts to some toxins in our bodies, converting them into less toxic substances. Our bodies need a slightly alkaline pH balance to be healthy. The typical Western diet creates an acidic pH in our bodies, and many health problems are attributed to this. Taking a tonic containing apple cider vinegar can help restore alkalinity, and therefore assist the body in getting rid of some of the health problems you may be experiencing.

On a daily basis, aim to have at least 2 tbsp. of raw Apple Cider Vinegar to keep your body healthy and strong.

Hi Carly,I love your enthusiasm and your positive and infectious outlook on life!I just read your email about Apple cider to have it every morning I was having it whenever I had heartburn which was often, it’s much better now. I read somewhere although it’s good too much can erode bones. How much is too much?

  2. Hi Carly….I just love your website, it is so true and down to earth, as you are.
Regarding apple cider vinigar, it is what I put on my salads, olive oil and apple cider vinigar, and I just love it, but I am going to try the morning drink I just read for sure. Keep up the good work.

  3. Hi Carly! I learned about the benefits of apple vinegar before, so I tried to add it to my daily routine. I add approx one ts to one liter of water, which I drank through the day in my office. That made 2-3 ts per day. After two weeks I felt so acidic I have to stop it completely. Acid taste in mounth, cravings for sweets, having to wash my teeths several times a day.
I don’t think 2 ts are that much, so I wonder where I did mistake with it…
Moreover, I somehow cannot believe vinegar creates alkaline enviroment in our bodies. Well – it is acid… I think maybe the real positive impact of it is desinfection, boost of digestion and in that way detox of the body. But maybe rather in limited amount and for a limited time.

    • I think it is better to just have a smaller glass 2 x a day as Carly suggests. I have only a glass of tepid water with the ACV and then drink a full glass of water straight away.

  4. I drink this ( with a tiny splash of honey) twice a day. Glad to hear you are also loving it!
One question? Will I look like you if I keep it up?

    • Carly i am 71 this year and my comment above was me being too optimistic! You are a beautiful young lady and obviously your lifestyle is working for you! Love your posts!

  5. Thank you for this article! I’m beginning my new path in life of happy and healthy. This is a great start for my mornings!

  6. Thank you Carly, my husband uses this vinegar, so it’s already in the house. I will start giving it a try. I was curious, can you substitute lemon juice rather than fresh lemons? If so, how much should I add? Thanks! Val

  7. I have been doing this since our last cleanse in the fall and I LOVE it and swear by the results. Thanks Carly for the idea.

  8. I hate the taste so I prefer to down it straight followed by a glass of water wkth lemon juice in it or a tsp of honey cinnamon mix

  9. Carly — just found your blog through B-School. Wow, it’s beautiful! Congratulations. I’m loving B-School and was looking for some others in the health/fitness space. My business ideas are scattered but I’ll be interesting in seeing your journey! Very inspiring! — Ericka, The Sweet Life (
