Kickin’ the Habit

Hello my Lovelies,

Recently it seems that I have been receiving a lot of questions about sugar and ways to get it out of your diets once and for all!

For many, sugar is the one thing that is contributing to holding onto those last few pounds or the 1 food that triggers emotional eating.  Girls, I feel you! Sugar and I go waaaaayyy back, so here goes:

Breaking the addition to sugar is one of the HARDEST

but most REWARDING things you can do for your health.

I know for me, sugar served as a friend, confidant and companion; it didn’t talk back or give an opinion; it didn’t judge or put me down; it was just there, silently accompanying me and comforting me in times of need.  It look a while of living in the natural health world to see how I was using sugar as a crutch and as soon as I brought a level of consciousness to the table, it was enough to serve as a catalyst for change.

I really observed my behavior and saw what was going on in my surroundings that was causing me to reach for the chocolate, cookies or donuts; stressful day at work, relationship problems, feeling uninspired…it was these times that I relied on the sugar as a pick me up.

Sound familiar?!

I encourage you to start by creating an awareness practice where you have extreme grace with yourself as you begin to see what is causing you to reach for the sugar.

A shift will begin.

From this point there are 2 paths to travel on:

1)   Kindly acknowledge the craving and slowly wean yourself off by giving in every now and then.

2)   Go cold turkey – NO sugar. Zip. Zero. Nada.

For individuals like me who really have a sugar addiction, cold turkey was the ONLY way to go.  There was no eating a piece of chocolate, I wanted the whole damn thing.  So when my time came, I went off sugar for 2 weeks.  WOW! What an experience.  I laughed, I cried, I begged for chocolate, I stared longingly through the candy store windows (ok not really) but in the end, I was FREE!

After the cycle is broken, it is super easy to add back in healthy sugar substitutes (not the refined white crap that always leaves you begging for more).

My suggestions:

–       Coconut sugar

–       Raw maple syrup

–        Raw Honey

Whatever you do, I beg you to NOT eat Splenda, Sweet and Low or any of the other colorful little bags they leave on the tables in restaurants.  Those sugar substitutes are FAKE food and we do not want that in our pure, beautiful bodies.

A diet rich in whole real foods, fats (think avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, nut butters & raw butter) & protein, will satiate you so much that a sweet treat including one of my sugar substitutions above will be more than enough!

Be kind to yourself in this process and know that you can’t do anything “wrong.” Health is an ever-evolving process and I commend you for stepping up to the plate.

I am here to support you, always.

To vibrant & beautiful living,
